About the TCRG
Cardiovascular research in Milton Keynes was established in 2003 when the first senior research nurse was appointed to assist recruitments into multicentre clinical trials. The first of these trials was EMPHASIS-HF. Despite hundreds of patients being screened, the recruitment for randomisation was unfortunately rather slow.
However over the years the Trust’s R&D department has been through several restructures and soon after the establishment of NIHR (the NHS’ research establishment) we grew and went from strength to strength. Over the last 12 years we have been recruiting into more than 40 trials acting as local PIs for over 1200 patients. We have been supervising postgraduate students and have also been successful co-applicants in several national grant applications.
Our research group consists of consultant colleagues with research interest plus junior colleagues and has contributed to a high number of peer reviewed original articles. Between the group we have presented over 40 abstracts at international and national meetings. The cardiovascular research group was awarded with the Thames Valley Health Research Award in 2017 as the “All-rounder best performing cardiovascular research team” by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Thames Valley and South Midlands.
We aim to continue and amplify our research achievement so that we can translate this into our clinical practice for the ultimate benefit of our patients.
