MKUH Newsletter discusses “Pioneering Professor Kardos”

In a recent newsletter sent to all MKUH staff, Professor Kardos work with Cranfield University was described as pioneering. Please see below for the extract:

MKUH consultant cardiologist, Professor Attila Kardos, has been working with researchers at Cranfield University on the use of AI-controlled robotics to deliver echocardiograms. It is hoped that the pioneering work will provide patients with greater accessibility to the scans and even support waiting time reduction.

The system uses a robotic arm which has an imaging device at its end. Images are fed to a computer where AI evaluates them in real time. Having proven highly-accurate to date, work is now continuing to test and refine the system.

Echocardiography is a critical tool for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. Professor Kardos said: “Using AI in echocardiography is exceptionally challenging however, the potential benefits to patients, colleagues and the public purse are compelling. I am thrilled to be part of this research and look forward to sharing further updates in the not-too-distant future.”
